Don’t Hate the Golfer, Hate the Golf

For the second time in two weeks, the President’s golf is bothering me. Last week, I discussed my misgivings about Big O’s vacationing while the world crumbles around us. I don’t have a problem with the Prez taking some time off, the President is really never not working. But I think O should tone it down a bit for PR reasons – it just doesn’t look good.

Well, apparently Obama doesn’t read this blog. Now, after making a speech to promise justice for the family of James Foley, the American journalist recently beheaded by ISIS, Big O decided to play some golf. As you would expect, when O tees off, lots of people get teed off. This time it’s even less surprising than usual. Hitting the links a few minutes after expressing condolences to Foley’s family looks just plain insensitive.

Once again, it’s a problem of perception. Even O’s biggest critics are hard pressed to suggest what the Prez should actually do about ISIS. They just know that whatever he’s doing is wrong. Most Americans can’t even agree about whether ISIS is really our problem. So for Obama, he’s damned if he does and damned if he doesn’t. I’d probably want to just say “fuck it” and play some golf, too.

But O doesn’t have the same luxuries that the rest of us do when it comes to our leisure hours. He’s always in the public eye, which means he’s never off the clock. Perception is everything. Maybe he should just have an indoor putting green installed in the White House.
