The actor died yesterday at age 76. Freeman was best known for spending 27 years in Shawshank State Prison where he and Tim Robbins brought racial harmony to South Maine. Corruption ran deep during Freeman’s stay at Shawshank. Tim Robbins was falsely accused of murdering his wife and another man, charges that he continually denied. Warden Bob Gunton suppressed testimony that could have had Tim Robbins released. In fairness to Gunton, he was just reading the script and the execution of the potential informant was an excellent plot twist.

After his release from Shawshank, Freeman continued to do work in activism and philanthropy. He formed the Grenada Relief Fund to aid victims of Hurricane Ivan. He has spoken out against Black History Month saying, “I don’t want a black history month. Black history is American history.” And in 2009 he was chosen to be one of the presenters at Nelson Mandela’s birthday party, whoever that is.
